MedVet’s Emergency Doctor, Dr. Gwen Myers, Works to Preserve Spectacled Eiders in Alaska

Posted on September 29, 2011 in Archive

The Eiders are a species of sea ducks that spend most of their lives in the Arctic ocean and are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act of 1993. This was Dr. Myers third year on the project with other veterinarians and biologists that travel to the North Slope of Alaska and camp on the edge of the Arctic Ocean. Dr. Myers performs a specialized surgery to implant Eiders with a small satellite transmitter, and than the birds are released. The implanted transmitters send a signal to a satellite that collects data on the movements of each bird for approximately 2 years. Data collected from these birds will provide much needed information about Spectacled Eider habitat use that is critical for continued species conservation in Alaska. MedVet is proud of Dr. Myers’ efforts to help preserve this unique species on our planet!
