Many heart conditions are, by nature, manageable rather than curable. And that can be a difficult thing for both pets and their owners.
That’s why MedVet Cardiology specialists are committed to finding ways to help improve quality and length of life for pets with heart disease.
From being the leading participant in the largest multicenter national clinical drug trial for dogs with congestive heart failure, to aiding in development of the first repair device for the most common congenital heart defect in dogs, MedVet is at the forefront of cardiology care, research, and technology.
Our veterinary cardiologists specialize in evaluating and treating dogs and cats with symptoms of heart or lung disease, including:
- Cough
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Collapse
- Abdominal swelling
- Exercise intolerance
Some pets we evaluate have no symptoms of heart disease, however, your family veterinarian may have detected an abnormality that needs further investigation such as:
- Extra heart sound
- Heart murmur
- Irregular heartbeat

- Cardiac ultrasound (echocardiogram or echo, including Color Flow Doppler) for non-invasive examination of the heart structure and function
- Electrocardiography (ECG, EKG) for evaluating the electrical activity of the heart including heart rate and heart rhythm
- Holter and event monitoring for long term evaluation of the heart rhythm in the home environment.
- Blood pressure evaluation for prevention of blindness, worsening kidney disease, heart disease, or stroke
- Pacemaker implantation for heart rate control
- Interventional therapy for treating congenital cardiac defects

What to Expect
Please know that the MedVet Cardiology team is committed to providing the best, most appropriate care for your pet in partnership with your family veterinarian.
- Plan to spend 1 to 2 hours at the first appointment.
- Bring any medical records or test results from your primary veterinarian.
- If your pet is on any medication, please bring it with you.
- Please complete the attached History Form and bring it with you to your visit
- A cardiology technician will talk with you about your pet’s background and condition to obtain a detailed medical history.
- A MedVet cardiologist will examine your pet and review the medical history, including information and test results from your primary veterinarian.
- Most likely, your pet will undergo an ultrasound of the heart, called an echocardiogram. This non-invasive test lets our specialist evaluate the heart’s ability to pump and relax, as well as look for heart enlargement, valve leaks or obstructions.
- One of our cardiologists will talk with you about your pet’s condition and suggest the appropriate course of medical therapy and follow-up.
- You and your primary veterinarian will receive a discharge summary detailing the clinical findings, diagnosis and treatment recommendation(s).
